This symposium will address the excitement and challenge associated with designing and building naval ships to take advantage of the flexibility offered by a highly integrated electric power system together with the awesome warfighting potential of high powered weapons and sensors. In developing such ships; energy transformation, storage and control clearly become critical elements in modern warship design. From the fuel source to delivery of propulsion power to providing high levels of power in various forms for sensors, weapons or aircraft launch, and ultimately to the delivery on target of high powered kinetic or directed energy weapons; the ability to provide the right form of energy at the right power level at the right place and at the right time is a vital factor in being able to provide this capability at sea in the near to mid-future.  The conference will explore the issues involved with integrating high powered electric weapons into modern warships both during initial construction and through back-fit.  A closely related concern is the affordability imperatives that are dominating future force considerations and the associated mandate to stabilize requirements. The conference will consider whether the technical risk and the resultant cost and schedule risk of electric ship technologies can be mitigated sufficiently to fit within these constraints, or whether their deployment might be substantially delayed due to affordability concerns.
