Welcome

The October 2007 “Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower” establishes the unified maritime strategy for the maritime forces of the United States – the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.  The strategy “stresses an approach that integrates seapower with other elements of national power, as well as those of our friends and allies”.  To implement this strategy, three areas will receive priority attention: Improved Integration and Interoperability, Enhanced Awareness, and Preparation of People.

A key to implementing this strategy is integrating our warfare systems, not only at a platform level, but also at the maritime force level.  That integration is a necessary condition for improving interoperability and enhancing our maritime domain awareness.

The ASNE Naval Warfare Systems (NWS) Symposium (formerly the Combat Systems Symposium) has been established to serve as a forum for the exchange of current and future innovative ideas relating to Naval warfare systems integration.  The Symposium will allow the vetting/peer review of ideas/technologies in a professional engineering environment with attendees from government, industry, and academia.

For the purposes of this Symposium we are defining warfare systems as tactical systems and tactical mission-support systems, and includes sensors, command and control, weapons, navigation, aviation support systems, mission planning; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR); interior and exterior communications, topside design, and warfare system networks.  The integration of these systems, within and across maritime force platforms, is an important part of this Symposium.

Topical areas to be presented and discussed will include:

  • Sensor Integration and Coordination, including Measurement and Track Reporting, EW (ES)/EO/IR Integration
  • Maritime Domain and Situation Awareness, including the Single Integrated Air Picture (SIAP)
  • Weapons Coordination, including Distributed Weapons Coordination and EW (EA) Integration
  • Maritime Force Mission Planning and Operational Integration
  • Communications (Internal/External) and Networking
  • Open Architecture (OA)/ OA Computing Environment (OACE) Standards
  • Mission-Specific Integration Issues: TAMD, ASUW, ASW, EW, STW, EXW, Ship Self-Defense, Homeland Security
  • Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Integration Issues
  • Platform-Specific Integration Issues: CV/CVN, LCS, DDG/DDG-1000, CG, Cutters
  • Cross-Maritime-Force (Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) Integration Issues
