Welcome

The U.S. Department of the Navy has identified a need to recapitalize its fleet of tug and salvage ships.  The Navy staff and Military Sealift Command believe that commercial platforms currently in design or under construction can address Navy requirements and afford the opportunity to leverage commercial technologies in terms of hull forms, dynamic positioning systems, and tow capabilities for the future fleet.  Accordingly, ASNE will host a Tug Boat and Salvage Ship Technology Symposium with an included Industry Day to provide a forum for discussion of available technologies.

The U.S. Navy’s T-ARS class and T-ATF class are both nearing the end of their service life, having been delivered in the 1980’s.  The next generation of these vessels will need to have optimal manning, lower maintenance, increased reliability, and usage of the latest in state-of-the-art technologies.  These multi-mission platforms must be designed to accommodate the future roles and requirements that will be placed upon them.  This symposium would like to involve a wide range of perspectives, including those from the U.S. Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, planning yard, commercial sector, operators, users, class societies, shipyards and shipbuilders, maintenance facilities, and academia.  These perspectives will help the Navy refine key performance criteria that will be used in these new ship platforms.

Various topics that should be of interest to the U.S. Navy as they consider the recapitalization of the U.S. Navy’s tug and salvage platforms include lessons learned, new and existing technologies, promising research, regulations compliance issues, safety factors, human system integration, fire fighting enhancements, salvage technologies, etc.

Note:

All questions answered during the presentation will be documented and posted on the Industry Day web site.  Other questions received before, during, or after Industry Day will be reviewed and the Government will post responses on the web site as it deems necessary.
